Dell announced updates to its high-end Studio XPS desktops and value-priced Inspiron desktops with Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors. The new Intel processors, formerly known as Arrandale, will provide both the high-end and the value desktop user with more power. They also feature a simpler motherboard architecture than when compared with older single- and dual-core processors. The Studio XPS 8100 is Dell's high-end multimedia desktop for discerning users that need more power for content creation tasks, as well as those multimedia consumers that value certifications like theater-quality THX TruStudio PC sound. The new Dell Inspiron 580 adds Intel's Arrandale processors (Core i3, Core i5) to the value desktop space.

The Dell Studio XPS 8100 replaces the previous Studio XPS 8000 desktops and comes in the same white and piano black case, but the 8100 is essentially a re-engineering of the internal components to support the new Core i3, i5, and i7 processors from Intel. The 8100 can be equipped with a variety of processors, from the dual core Intel Core i3-530 all the way up to the quad core Intel Core i7-870 processor. Like the previous generation, the Studio XPS 8100 can be equipped with Nvidia's GeForce 3D Vision kit for a full 3D gaming and video experience with the use of electronic 3D glasses. Both ATI and Nvidia graphics cards are configurable, from the Nvidia GeForec G310 up to the ATI Radeon HD 5770, but understandably the GeForce 3D Vision glasses only work with the Nvidia graphics cards (like the GeForce GTX260). Two hard drive bays can be equipped with dual 1.5TB SATA drives, either singly or in a RAID 1 (mirror/DataSafe) or RAID 0 (striping for performance) configuration. Four DIMM slots support up to 16GB of memory (Windows 7 64-bit is standard in Home Premium, Ultimate, and Professional flavors). Other multimedia options, such as ATSC/HDTV TV tuners, dual optical drives (including Blu-ray), discrete X-Fi and THX sounds cards, and WiFi cards, provide the multimedia maven with a plethora of configuration options. The Dell Studio XPS 8100 starts at $749.

The Inspiron 580 has plenty of configuration options as well, but at a more reasonable $249 starting price. The 580 comes in the familiar Inspiron 500 series chassis, seen on systems like the Inspiron 545. The new Inspiron 580 is built around the new Core i3 and Core i5 Arrandale processors, giving the Inspiron line a little more oomph over older Celeron and Pentium dual-core processors. Like the Studio XPS 8100, the Inspiron 580 has a surfeit of options, like up to two 1TB hard drives (though most will ship with a single SATA hard drive), integrated Intel GMA graphics or optional Nvidia GeForce GT220 graphics, up to a Blu-ray optical drive, optional Wifi networking, TV tuners, sound cards, and up to 8GB of memory. The 580's new Intel integrated graphics will support Blu-ray and HDMI output, which is an improvement over previous Intel integrated solutions (so you aren't required to upgrade graphics to watch Blu-ray movies).

While the Studio XPS 8100 may be the sporty model you lust after, you can get much of what it has to offer with the more reasonable Inspiron 580.
