Primbon - Marine animal lovers can learn fun facts like how a leatherback turtle eats a jellyfish or how a perch uses its fins to maneuver through the water during the annual Moss Landing Marine Laboratories open house this weekend.

Nearly 6,000 people are expected to come to the free two-day event organized by graduate students who study there. The weekend will host a variety of events including a touch tank, a puppet show musical, tours and educational seminars.

"This is our best opportunity to show our research to the community," said Marilyn Cruickshank, an vertebrate ecology lab student. "A lot of people don't understand what we are doing up here, some people don't even know we're here. This is a fantastic way for us to reach out to the public and try to elicit the respect and love for nature that we have."

For the past four semesters, Cruickshank has studied seabirds and chick growth rates in the Monterey Bay and plans on going to Japan to compare population growth and boundaries in the Pacific Rim. Cruickshank is one of about 150 students from nine different laboratories at Moss Landing that collaborated on making the open house happen.

This year, students and staff will give presentations on diving, tracking seabirds, swimming styles of fish, dissecting beach-cast marine mammals and the life of a marine scientist. Kids will be able to experience what marine scientists do by learning how to use a remote operated vehicle, watch video

from a camera attached to leatherback turtles eating jellyfish and explore a Zodiac boat used by researchers.

Visitors can also buy tickets for a raffle and win tours, Monterey Bay artwork and other prizes.

"It's been really exciting putting this together," said Deasy Lontoh, vertebrate ecology lab student. "The proceeds from our raffle helps students whether through scholarships or getting some new equipment. It helps students tremendously."

The Moss Landing Marine Laboratories are the second oldest marine labs on Monterey Bay and is operated by seven California State University campuses.
